5 volumes; 8vo; three-quarter light brown morocco over marbled boards; spine ruled & stamped in gilt; top edge gilt; Great Seal of California stamped in gold on covers; frontis; reproductions; photos; maps, some folding, in each volume. New York: The Century Company, [1915]. First Edition. Together with George Davidson, Eldredge led a campaign to restore the original Spanish place names to numerous California locations. The present work comprises a sweeping narrative history of the state including origins & discovery, Spanish California, the Gold Rush & Civil War times to the early 19th century. final volume covers California geology, flora & fauna, climate; the Mormons in California; agronomics, the fruit industry, astronomy, mining, banking, literature, and more. All supported by a plentiful assortment of illustrations and maps. Wear to head of spines with closed splits to leather up to 1"; blemishes at tails of spines from label removal; bookplate on front pastedowns; light rubbing & a few scuffs at edges; overall the leather appears supple, joints & hinges sound. Good or better condition.
