BROWN, James Berry. Journal of a Journey across the Plains in 1859 Item #0950
72 p.; illustrated boards in publisher's plain wrapper; imp. 8vo; illustrated. San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1970. Edited with an introduction by George R. Stewart; prospectus laid in; based on a 54 page manuscript given to the Bancroft Library in 1969. In 1859, while working as a schoolteacher in Iowa, Brown got "Pike's Peak fever," and took to the trail with his brother Jesse bound for California. Their route took them across the Missouri River, over the Nebraska City road, the Platte River, the Lander Cutoff, Lassen's Meadow, The Honey Lake Route, and finally the so-called "Humbug Road," a total distance of about 1755 miles in 117 days. Light soil to wrapper; otherwise fine with very good wrapper and prospectus. |
