[MISSOURI & IOWA MAP]. Northern Boundary of Missouri
Item #1271

43 p.; 8vo; cloth; 17.5" x 29" engraved map folded to 7.5" x 4", bound in rear. Washington DC, 1842. 27th Congress, 3d Session. Ho. of Reps. Doc. No. 38. Legend title: Map Showing the Disputed Boundaries of Missouri and Iowa. This is the 1838 map from the 25th congressional report on the boundary dispute which was eventually settled by the Supreme Court in 1849. Map shows four boundaries in question including: Old Indian Boundary Line or Sullivan's Line and Brown's Line which was claimed by Missouri with an extended, Line Claimed by Half Breeds. The report records the various documents pertaining to the long-standing dispute that had its origins in 1808 when the Osage Indians ceded to the United States all their claims to lands lying north of the Missouri river, with no boundaries specified. Moderate foxing to last few text pages with the final two showing a closed tear running 4" one page to the next across gutter; map is very nice, with browning only along upper fold crease and light foxing to verso.
