KNOX, Dudley W. Naval Sketches of the War in California. Reproducing Twenty-Eight Drawings Made in 1846-47, by William H. Meyers, Gunner on the U.S. Sloop-of War Dale. Introduction by Franklin D. Roosevelt Item #2609
40 pp.; folio; leather-backed marbled boards; red leather spine label; 28 full page colored drawings. New York: Random House, 1939. Limited Edition. 1/1000 copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. One of the Fifty Books of the Year. Heller & Magee in the Grabhorn Bibliography state: "The method of color reproduction employed in Naval Sketches . . . is novel in the history of printing. First the original drawings were reproduced in black and white by a gravure process. The color blocks were then cut in linoleum, and printed over the black & white prints. Shading was effected by sanpapering the linoleum." Bit of bump to front corners; white spine leather is somewhat rubbed and chafed; otherwise very good or better. |
