[NEVADA]. Postal Cover: Wells, Fargo & Co., Hamilton, Nevada [c.1885] Item #5966
Uncancelled blue one-cent [upside down]; blue oval date stamp; in mylar envelope mounted on an old Siegel Auction Gallery card. First settled by Mexican prospectors in 1864. They named the mine and the town after a Catholic Mass day. Beginning in 1880 the area began to prosper and in 1882 a good water supply and a spur of the Carson & Colorado railroad came to the camp. In the boom days before the panic of 1893, Candelaria could boast of two hotels, stores, offices for lawyers, three doctors and countless saloons. Very good condition. |
