8vo; 596 pp.; original gilt-titled brown cloth; engraved frontis portrait. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1867. First Edition. Davis was a U.S. Representative from Maryland and was one of the Radical Republicans during the Civil War and Reconstruction. He favored more punitive treatment of ex-Confederates after the war. Cloth frayed at both ends of spine and worn through at corners; frontis partly detached; previous owner's name on front endpaper; good condition overall.
