Drags-the-Rope

By David Humphreys Miller. Colored pencil and crayon on tinted art paper, drawn from life c. 1940, not signed by Miller. 11"x8". Oglala Sioux Drags-the-Rope was 20 years old at the time of the Little Big Horn, and was among the first to encounter the Seventh Cavalry. He was fired upon by three soldiers while out looking for stray horses, and witnessed the killing of the first Indian casualty, the 10-year-old boy Deeds. Upon returning to camp, he rode with Crazy Horse to meet Custer's forces attacking from the north. He was a ghost dancer in 1890.
