Red Paint

By David Humphreys Miller. Colored pencil and crayon on tinted art paper, drawn from life, dated 1939 and signed D. H. Miller. 9"x6.5". Miller's adoptive father Black Elk introduced him to Red Paint, who was 18 or 19 when he fought Custer's troops at the Little Big Horn. He told Miller how he counted four coups, took two scalps, and captured three cavalry horses in the battle. Red Paint died in 1939, the year this sketch was made.
