Sherman Sage

By David Humphreys Miller. Colored pencil and crayon on tinted art paper, drawn from life c. 1940, signed David H. Miller. 11"x7.5". David Miller met Sherman Sage, an Arapaho veteran of the Custer Battle, on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, near Ethete. At the age of 20, Sage and four of his friends slipped away from the agency at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, and had a series of adventures that ended with them being present at the Little Big Horn as a guest of Chief Two Moon. After the battle, he and his friends returned to Fort Robinson. In the summer of 1889, Sherman Sage traveled to Nevada to meet Wovoka, the prophet of the Ghost Dance, and brought the new religion back to the Arapahoes.
