Joseph White Cow Bull. Signed

By David Humphreys Miller. Colored pencil and crayon on tinted art paper, drawn from life c. 1937, signed David H. Miller. 10"x8". Joseph White Cow Bull, an Oglala Sioux warrior aged 28 at the Little Big Horn, joined three Cheyenne warriors to defend a ford when troops under George A. Custer charged down the Medicine Tail Coulee to attack the Indian village. Exchanging shots with a buckskin-clad leader who may well have been Custer, White Cow Bull saw him fall off his horse in the river, dead or mortally wounded. This portrait is signed by Joseph White Cow Bull, with whom David Miller visited the site of the Custer battle in 1937.
