Chief Joseph Black Horn

By David Humphreys Miller. Colored pencil and crayon on tinted art paper, drawn from life c. 1937, unsigned. 10"x8". Chief Black Horn, a minor band chief of the Oglala Sioux, fought under Crazy Horse at the Little Big Horn. In the action against Custer's command, he captured two cavalry horses. In 1890 he joined a camp of ghost dancers. About a decade later he traveled with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show for several seasons. David Miller first met Chief Black Horn at Porcupine, a trading-post and tiny settlement on the Pine Ridge Reservation, in the summer of 1937.
