Mountain Chief

By David Humphreys Miller. Colored pencil and crayon on tinted art paper, drawn from life c. 1940, signed David H. Miller. 11"x8". Northern Piegan. Mountain Chief was one of the last Blackfoot war chiefs. The Marias Massacre of 1870 came about when a group of U.S. Cavalry led by Major Eugene Baker was seeking Mountain Chief's band but found Chief Heavy Runner's camp instead. This sketch is untitled, but has been identified as Mountain Chief by comparison with David Miller's tempera portrait of the Piegan leader.
