Chief Henry Oscar One Bull

By David Humphreys Miller. Colored pencil and crayon on tinted art paper, drawn from life c. 1938, unsigned. 10"x8". This portrait is untitled, but appears to be Chief Henry Oscar One Bull. One Bull was the first Custer survivor to pose for young David Humphreys Miller. A nephew, adopted son, and bodyguard of Chief Sitting Bull, One Bull held a high position in the Sioux hierarchy, and provided Miller with much of the firsthand information that was eventually published in Custer's Fall. He led the counterattack against Reno's troopers at the Little Big Horn.
