John Sitting Bull

By David Humphreys Miller. Colored pencil and crayon on tinted art paper, drawn from life in 1938, signed Dave Miller. 10"x8". John Sitting Bull, adopted deaf-mute son of the famed Hunkpapa Sioux Chief Sitting Bull, was 14 years old in 1876 when he fought in the early phases of the Custer battle. John Sitting Bull told David Miller about witnessing the death of his adoptive father. Regarding the massacre at Wounded Knee, Miller relates, "John also felt no little responsibility for the massacre as he couldn't hear the soldiers' command for the Indians to surrender their weapons. Slow to respond to the order, he was whirled around by two troopers causing his rifle to fire accidentally. Thinking the shot was intentional, soldiers began firing at the unarmed Indians and even at each other."
