Michael F. Kotowski. Virginian Mallet Number 805 Item #7514
17"x23" original painting, mixed media, matted and framed. Signed lower left. 1986. "Lo how the mighty have fallen," as this illustration shows the last Virginian 800 class monster Mallet awaiting its fate, rusting away on the "rip" track in 1958. The 800s were among the biggest mallets ever built and were definitely the most powerful. The Blue Ridge Mountains no longer reverberate to their booming exhaust as their twenty driving wheels pull 17,000 ton coal trains up the grades and around the double curves. |
