Michael F. Kotowski. Great Northern Number 1981 Item #7515
17"x23" original painting, mixed media, matted and framed. Signed lower left. 1986. Most Mallet type steam locomotives were a combination of two similar smaller steam engines. Occasionally a mix of two different engine types was built, the result being a true hybrid. Great Northern's No. 1981, a venerable 2-6 + 8-0, drifts into Allouez, Wisconsin with an endless string of iron ore cars. Somehow, as modern technology was taking hold in America, these 40 year anachronisms were still operating. |
