154 pp., incl. introduction & glossary, plus appendices; 12" x 22"; cloth covers reproducing an aristocratic Heian wave design agains a gilt stamped royal purple background; Japanese style binding with patterned ribbon ties, in gilt stamped, safflower box, lined with hand made rice paper scattered with gold leaf; tipped in color reproductions of the scroll up to double page, throughout. [Tokyo]: Kodansha, 1971. Limited Edition, No. 576 of 1500 copies. A classic work of Japanese literature, The Tale of the Genji was written during the peak of the Heian Period [794-1195], and is often referred to as the first novel. Text includes translations of the scroll with commentary. Slight fading on box; else, fine.
