16"x16"; oil on board; signed. Painter, muralist. Born in England 1877, and d. 1967. Studied at the Liverpool Art School and Royal Institute, but immigrated to America to continue his education and study with Henry Ward Ranger. In 1922 he moved to Hawaii, opened up an art gallery, and served as the first director to the Honolulu Academy of Arts. In 1928 he arrived in California and worked in Pasadena and San Francisco, before deciding to settle down in Carmel. Immediately after his arrival in California, the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena commissioned him to paint 41 scenes of California. Paintings of his specialize in poetic depictions of the coast and of the Monterey Peninsula, with Picture Bridge known as his best work. [Hughes and askart.com]. |
