LAURITZ, Paul. San Diego Item #8096
32"x30"; oil on canvas; signed. B. Norway 1889, d.1975. Lauritz was exposed to art at an early age by hanging out with local and foreign artists in Larvik. He immigrated to Canada at age 16 and began to travel West. Working as a commercial artist wasn't an adequate form of income, so he moved to Alaska to follow the Gold Rush. Not particularly successful at mining he returned to painting. As a painter, he became close friends with artist Sydney Lawrence. The two held joint exhibitions in Alaska. In 1919 he left Alaska and settled in Los Angeles. His fascination with the desert encouraged him to take excursions up to the Sierras and along the California coast. He taught painting at Chouinard and Otis Institutes, and was a member of several prominent art clubs including: Laguna Beach AA, California Art Club, Painters and Sculptors of LA, Royal Society of Artists, and many others.
