Howes, 816. The two partially colored original maps laid in are: Lt. M. D. McAlester, "Sketch of the Battlefield and Works in front of Williamsburg VA., May 5th 1862, pub. 1876 and Edward Ruger, "Map illustrating The Operations of the Seventh Division Under Brig. General G. W. Morgan at Cumberland Gap Tennessee 1862, pub., 1877; 10.5" x 11.25" & 13" x 12" respectively. The McAlester is reproduced in the Atlas in plate XX, part 3, [8" x 5.5"]; the Ruger is reproduced in the Atlas as CXVIII, part 2, [9" x 7.5"]. Most of the covers are split at spine with occasional soil and browning, chips at edges; the covers of first two and last parts bore the brunt of the wear, the first being in tatters, the second with more edge wear and browing. A great majority of the plates are very clean with these exceptions noted: plate 70 with half-inch closed tear at right edge, in the margin only; plate 85 with light foxing right edge; plates 91-93 with stain at bottom edge away from map border; soil to front lower edge of cover on part XXII follows to a small degree on corner tips of plates 106 to 109, well away from map edges; plate 155 with soil to upper right corner & foxing to right edge, slightly affecting map; cover to part XXXII is soiled and torn at top, with subsequent stains to top edge of first plate [156], affecting a portion of the map, and minor brown stains to top edge of plate 157; plates 167 & 168 with crease and wear at corner tips; 172 to 175 show moderate soil, corner crease with 3 dark stains to 172 at top margin bleeding over border of map.
