Alexander Stern (1904-1994). Etcher, painter, illustrator. Raised in San Francisco, attending Polytechnic High School. He attended Columbia University, then returned to San Francisco, entering the California School of Fine Arts. After spending eight years as a member of the art department of the S. F. Chronicle, Stern was in New York from 1934-44 working on art commissions. Once again back in the San Francisco Bay Area, Stern established a studio, home and printing plant in San Mateo where he produced etchings, prints and Christmas Cards. [Hughes.
