Group of over 90 mining stock quotation columns clipped from newspapers, 1906-Jan., 1908.
Share quotes represent Tonopah, Goldfield, Bullfrog, Manhattan and other disitricts. The Goldfield rush had far less to do with minerals than with securing leases, organizing companies, and selling shares. Sally Zanjani writes of the period: "In November 1906, the Goldfield News described an exciting but by no means unusual day when trading continued in the street after hours: 'The day had been marked by great fluctuations on the stock exchange and strikes and rumors of strikes in the mines. Hence the curb was a tumultuous oneāShares were bought and sold in blocks of thousandsāThere was no transfer of certificates nor of checks, that remaining for subsequent settlementsā' Inflated beyond their real value, Goldfield mining stocks plummeted as rapidly as they had risen when the crash came in October, 1907. It has been estimated that losses to stockholders far exceeded the value of all the ore ever produced in Goldfield." (emphasis this catalogers)-The Glory Days in Goldfield, Nevada, p. 32. These clipped columns document this ascent and descent.
