San Francisco Renaissance: The North Beach Coffee House Drawings, 1955-1975
Ink Sketches by Joe Brotherton
Artist Biography

Past patrons of North Beach coffee houses during the San Francisco Renaissance will hang out once again, at this exhibition at Johns' Western Gallery. The exhibit opens February 23rd, and will feature drawings of coffee house regulars at such local java meccas as Malvina, Caffé Trieste, and the Savoy Tivoli during the fifties, sixties, and early seventies.

North Beach painter and heavy coffee drinker Joe Brotherton sketched these coffee house aficionados from life. He kept sketchbooks at the various locations, in order to be sure to catch any unusually resplendent specimen on the wing. The San Francisco Renaissance was a literary event. Kerouac's On the Road, Ginsberg's Howl, and other American classics came to life in San Francisco during this time.
